Dr. Jan Sherman Speaks

29 November 2010 2 Comments

No, that is not a picture of Dr. Jan Sherman.  It’s Phoebe Fairgrave Omlie, a dominating figure in the aviation arena, with roots right here in the mid-south!  On Friday, December 10, 2010, our guest speaker will be Dr. Jan Sherman.  Dr. Sherman chairs the Department of History at the University of Memphis.  She will be speaking about her book “Phoebe.”  This book is the story of Phoebe Fairgrave Omlie, an aviatrix with a fascinating history.  She played a central role in developing and legitimizing commercial and private aviation.  Come visit Memphis Central Rotary, listen to Dr. Sherman and learn about one of the true American female heroes!

What a riveting program. Dr. Sherman provided quite a compelling and exciting story about Phoebe. This was a fascinating story and the book will be an interesting read. What I found interesting was how Ameila Earhart was not really much of a pilot. Her husband was just a really good marketing person. I look forward to learning more about this subject.
