Ann Dudash will be speaking to us this Friday, April 27. Ann is a professional communications person and is heavily involved in Memphis in May. This year, the Memphis in May host country is the Phillipines. Come and find out more about this interesting topic this Friday at the University of Memphis Holiday Inn.

Buffet is served (and it is good). We begin at noon, but you may want to arrive early to have time to enjoy some conversation with your meal before our speaker gets under way. All are invited, and guests are encouraged!

District Conference this Weekend!

We will not have our normally scheduled meeting this week. The District 6800 conference takes place this weekend in Tupelo, MS., and our very own Marty Petrusek will be installed as District Governor! If you have not already made plans to attend and or registered, please click here to register.

Character Achievement Awards 2012!

This week, our meeting will host the Character Achievement Awards, chaired by Leroy Dahler. The CAAs are one of our most revered projects, where we award scholarships to students who have struggled through hardships and come out on top. We’ll have a private dining buffet set up for us in the Overton Room (at the top of the escalator) of the Holiday Inn. The cost for this luncheon will be about $21 per person (all inclusive) and the buffet is Chef’s Choice, which has always been very good. Guests are welcomed and encouraged.

Air Force Association

This Friday, March 30, Colonel Mark Devine, of the Air Force Association will be our speaker. The AFA is a non-profit, independent organization that, among other things, aims to help the public understand the intricate and important role that aerospace power plays in our nations’ security. They are huge advocates for the entire Air Force family, and have many programs that help them accomplish their goals.

We meet at noon, at the University of Memphis Holiday Inn. Plan to arrive a little early to have time to get your food and hob-knob a little!

Dictionary Project 2012!

This week, one of our newest members, Ben Boston, will be speaking to us about the bilingual Dictionary Project he has been working on for some months now. Ben employed help from the Boy Scouts, and together they will be passing out hundreds of dictionaries at schools in the mid-south. The need for these dictionaries was much greater than anyone anticipated. We look forward to hearing Ben’s story.

As usual, we will meet at the University of Memphis Holiday Inn on Central Avenue, at noon. Come early to beat the buffet line!

Mid-South Access Center for Technology

This Friday’s speaker is Dr. LaVonnie Perry Claybon, Director Mid-South Access Center for Technology at the University of Memphis. The Mid-South Access Center for Technology is an assistive technology resource center providing services for individuals with disabilities in Memphis and the Mid-South region, and is affiliated with the Center for Rehabilitation and Employment Research. Begun in 1995 by Dr. Tom Buggey, the center focuses on empowering those who are disabled through the use of adaptive technology. Come join us for lunch and a great speaking event this Friday, March 2, 2012 at the University of Memphis, Holiday Inn at noon.

Paula Casey – Women’s Suffrage TN 19th Amendment Ratification

On Friday, February 17, 2012, our speaker will be Paula Casey. Ms. Casey will be speaking about women’s suffrage, and particularly about Tennessee’s pivotal role in getting the 19th amendment passed, and thereby giving women the right to vote. This is seems apropos, in light of certain issues being debated in our country right now.

Cheyenne Johnson – Shelby Co. Property Assessor

This week, our speaker will be Deborah Hester Harrison, President and CEO of Girls, Inc., an organization dedicated to helping girls aged 6-12 realize their full potential and vision in life.

Annie Wu – Traditional Chinese Culture

This week, our speaker will be Annie Wu. Annie is a Senior Technical Analyst at FedEx, and is deeply involved with traditional Chinese Culture. She will be speaking about the Renaissance and traditional Chinese culture. Shen Yun, (a performing arts company focusing on traditional Chinese culture of the past 5000 years) has a mission of reviving the essence of 5000 years of ancient Chinese culture. This culture had been nearly wiped out by the Chinese communist government over the years. Thanks to organizations like Shen Yun, the beauty of this ancient culture’s traditions are experiencing a revival. Come and have a great lunch, good conversation, and listen to Annie. There will, hopefully, be time for Q&A afterward. We meet, as usual, at the University of Memphis Holiday Inn, at noon on Fridays.
