Paula Casey – Women’s Suffrage TN 19th Amendment Ratification

On Friday, February 17, 2012, our speaker will be Paula Casey. Ms. Casey will be speaking about women’s suffrage, and particularly about Tennessee’s pivotal role in getting the 19th amendment passed, and thereby giving women the right to vote. This is seems apropos, in light of certain issues being debated in our country right now.

This week, our speaker will be Deborah Hester Harrison, President and CEO of Girls, Inc., an organization dedicated to helping girls aged 6-12 realize their full potential and vision in life.

Annie Wu – Traditional Chinese Culture

This week, our speaker will be Annie Wu. Annie is a Senior Technical Analyst at FedEx, and is deeply involved with traditional Chinese Culture. She will be speaking about the Renaissance and traditional Chinese culture. Shen Yun, (a performing arts company focusing on traditional Chinese culture of the past 5000 years) has a mission of reviving the essence of 5000 years of ancient Chinese culture. This culture had been nearly wiped out by the Chinese communist government over the years. Thanks to organizations like Shen Yun, the beauty of this ancient culture’s traditions are experiencing a revival. Come and have a great lunch, good conversation, and listen to Annie. There will, hopefully, be time for Q&A afterward. We meet, as usual, at the University of Memphis Holiday Inn, at noon on Fridays.

Jim Marsalis – AFL Player Foundation

This week, Jim Marsalis, former AFL star cornerback, will be our speaker. Jim played in Super Bowl IV for the Kansas City Chiefs, defeating the Minnesota Vikings. He will be representing the AFL Player Foundation. Come hear what this is all about. We meet at noon at our regular place, the University of Memphis Holiday Inn. Arrive a few minutes early to get a good seat and to have plenty of time to eat and chat.

The Withers Collection – January 13, 2012

This Friday, January 13, 2012, we will be back in our regular meeting place – the University of Memphis Holiday Inn at 3700 Central Avenue. Our speaker will be representing the Withers Collection. The Withers Collection is a huge, 60-year span of over 1 million images covering Civil Rights, Memphis music, the Negro Baseball League, Beale Street, Memphis history and politics and much more. All images were take by Ernest Withers, a renowned photojournalist who traveled with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and many others.

The museum and collection is located right here in Memphis, on Beale Street no less. Come hear about the legacy the Mr. Withers left behind, and the good work the Withers Collection Museum and Gallery is doing to preserve, archive and interpret the huge collection. As usual, we meet at noon, at the University of Memphis Holiday Inn. Arrive early to get seated and started on lunch.

Kelly Penwell – Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation

This Friday, January 6, 2012, our speaker will be Kelly Penwell. Kelly is Program Manager at the University of Memphis’ Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. According to the CEI’s website:

Our mission at the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI) is to assist our clients become innovation catalysts who have the ability to proactively recongnize oppurtunities through societal trends and key technologies.

What does that mean? Kelly is going to explain it all to us. She is a former Rotarian and Paul Harris fellow, so she is familiar with how our organization works. This looks to be an intriguing event. Come join us for lunch at the University of Memphis at 12 noon, as usual.

*Please note, our meeting location will be at the University of Memphis Excecutive Conference Center, room 304. Off-street parking is available in the garage next to the ECC at a cost of $2 per hour. You can also can park in the hotel lot and walk across the street.

We hope this Holiday season finds you full of mirth and good will! We will not meet this week or next, due to the Holidays. Our next meeting will be January 6th, at our normal place and time: noon on Friday at the University of Memphis Holiday Inn.

Our next speaker is Kelly Penwell. She is Program Manager for the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Memphis. More details will be forthcoming. In the meantime have a wonderful Holiday season!

Roquita Coleman – Supply Chain Logistics Marketing

You are in for a treat this Friday. Our speaker will be Roquita Coleman, Solutions Manager, CN Supply Chain Solutions at CN Railroad, President at the Memphis World Trade Club, and on the Board of Directors for Memphis in May 2012/2013. She is a powerhouse of energy and focus. A good example of this is what she did to complete the fundraiser for St. Jude’s 60-day Challenge. The challenge was to complete 60 sessions of Bikram yoga in 60 days. Well, she did it. In 45 days! For those of you who aren’t familiar with Bikram yoga, it is hatha yoga practiced for about 90 minutes, in 105 degree heat. That means she had some days of multiple bikram yoga workouts!

Come listen to Roquita as she regales us with information about Supply Chain Logistics Management and Marketing, and whatever else she may have up her sleeve. I suspect she has some interesting stories to share with us. We meet at noon, Friday December 18, at the University of Memphis Holiday Inn.

Dr. Janaan Sherman – Univerisity of Memphis

This week, our speaker will be Jan Sherman, chair of the Department of History at the University of Memphis. Dr. Sherman has been with us a number of times in the past. She may as well be a member! She is certainly always an informative and entertaining speaker, and is a fount of historical information. Here is a brief bio from the University:

Dr. Janann Sherman is the Olin Atkins Professor of History and chair of the History Department at the University of Memphis. She holds a Ph.D. from Rutgers University and has been at the University of Memphis since 1994.

Sherman is the author or co-author of five books: The Perfect 36: Tennessee Delivers Woman Suffrage; No Place for a Woman: A Life of Senator Margaret Chase Smith; Interviews with Betty Friedan; Memphis is Black and White and Beale Street. Her current project is a biography of aviation pioneer, Phoebe Fairgrave Omlie.

Come and hear Dr. Sherman regale us with her intriguing stories of the past. We meet at the University of Memphis Holiday Inn, 3700 Central Avenue, at noon on Fridays.
